I bought these as replacements for the front door speakers in my 2000 BMW 740iL. I checked fit at Amazon, Kicker and Crutchfield sites and bought these because they were the only speakers I could find that would fit for sure. My factory speakers are components (separate woofers, mids and tweets). These Kickers are component speakers also so I just used the mid-bass driver. The mid driver has a big hole in it to mount the tweeter if need be. That adds to the flexibility of install but hurts the overall sound. Since I didn't need the tweets (mine rock), I elected to install the "phase plug" in place of the tweets and didn't use the crossover (my amp has crossovers built in). Well, these Kickers actually don't sound any better than the worn out factory speakers that are 11 years old and have coated-paper cones with totally deteriorated cone surrounds (the foam around the edge of the original speakers is crumbling apart). To be fair, I'm certain that my original speakers were of top quality, though not of name brand; they are made in Belgium and seem to be very well made and of the same impedence.

Where the Kickers fail is in reproducing tom-tom drums and deeper voices, exactly the range in which I expect a 5.25 inch speaker to excel. They sound like they have a loose piece of paper glued to them. Basically, at any frequency higher than where you can actually see the speaker move, they have a rattle. Also, when the freqs get low enough to see the cone move, they sound mushy and lose volume quickly. I don't expect 5.25 inch speakers to pound the low bass but I ceartainly expect Kickers to rock from 400Hz to 2Khz.

I can't comment on the treble quality of the Kickers as I elected to not use their tweeters.

I have decided to buy some "Silver Flute" speakers from Madisound, on sale for $20 each, and will update this review after comparing the outcome. The Silver Flutes are highly regarded in the DIY home speaker community as a great "bang for your buck" speaker with performance on par with $100 speakers.

If happy with the Silver Flutes I'll condemn Kicker forever; if the Flutes are inferior, I will retract part of this review.
